Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring acid found in the skin, and is the key component of the extra cellular matrix. Its two main properties: being hygroscopic (water-holding), and viscoelastic (lubricating) allow it to give the skin the degree of hydration it needs. Over time skin loses its natural abundance of hyaluronic acid due to degradation, leading to epidermal sagging, and the of wrinkles.
